Cascades Staff 2023

Cascades encompasses two of my biggest passions in life: ministry and nature. I grew up in Seattle surrounded by a loving family and a faithful church community, with the Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains right outside my window. My faith and outlook on ministry today have been shaped by these experiences and many wonderful, memory-filled summers spent at Covenant Beach, Circle “C” Ranch, and Cascades. Some of my favorite moments at Cascades include watching eager campers roll through the gates during check-in, and listening in during the end-of-the-week campfire as they share the wonderful things that God has done in their lives. I am blessed to make new memories now watching my own family grow up at camp, while I enjoy hiking, golfing, movies, and all things technology in my spare time.

The outdoors has called to me throughout my life. God has most poignantly met me through the awe of creation, and it is in the wilderness where God has consistently called me and shaped my faith. Camping is a big part of this for me – from my earliest years of camping with my family to attending and then working at a number of Covenant camps. After seminary, I settled in the Pacific Northwest where I found quick access to mountains and the ocean. For 15 years, I served as a Covenant pastor at a church in this region, which provided me the privilege of participating in retreats and camps as well as connecting others with the beauty and refreshment of Cascades. Serving here is a convergence of my love for creation, for ministry, for community, and for discipleship. Cascades is also a great backdrop for my other interests in gardening and landscape, building projects, walking in the woods, and other outdoor activities with my wife and two kids.

Working at Cascades is the culmination of several professional threads coming together for me. As someone who has been in a ministry context for over twenty years, while working professionally as an editor and a fundraiser, becoming the Cascades’ Director of Development was a providential moment in my life. Having the opportunity to build missional partnerships here at Cascades is a privilege. As a farmer’s daughter, I am perhaps most excited to be involved as we begin a new chapter with Sunrise Farms. I am blessed to have had my children and church family attend camp here at Cascades and look forward to many more memories in the future. When I’m not talking about the vision of Cascades with our many generous partners, you can likely find me out spending time with the chickens. If you love soccer, hiking, and traveling, or have a penchant for interior decorating, come say hello the next time you are at Cascades.

I have long felt most at home in the outdoors, which led me to a career in law enforcement as a game warden for the State of Washington. In 2018, God lifted me from my seat in church (though I don’t remember standing!) and called me into ministry. As an outdoor person serving the church, my wife and I were always passionate about taking our church youth group on hikes, lake days, and other adventures outside. That passion continued to drive us as we transitioned to Cascades with our teenagers, who have long been attending summer camp programs here. My family and I are blessed beyond anything we ever thought possible to be a camp family. We enjoy waterskiing, snowskiing, hiking, hunting, gardening – anything outdoors! It is my prayer that the work I do paves the way for you having an encounter with God and His creation.

I’ve found myself continually drawn to Cascades throughout my life. God has used this place to shape who I am, and I feel blessed to be a part of this team that gets to serve God and others through ministry in the woods. I love that my job allows me to be creative, relational, and forward-thinking. My favorite part of my job is watching people experience Cascades for the very first time – seeing people fall in love with this place and witnessing how God speaks to them in the seclusion of the wilderness. Outside of camp I enjoy cooking, traveling, watching movies, and spending time with friends.

Cascades has had a huge impact on my life over the years. God has used this place to influence pretty much every major decision in my adult life, including drawing me to the Pacific Northwest from Texas to work on summer staff and as an intern, and meeting and proposing to my wife – and now He’s landed me here once again, in a position I never could have anticipated. This truly is a place where you can get away from the distractions of life and let God work on your story. Just be prepared for Him to shake things up! My favorite part about my role here is using food as a means to serve God. I love how food, especially the act of breaking bread together, can be a form of worship in itself. In my spare time I enjoy barbecuing, watching movies, hiking, reading, hanging out with friends, and bird watching.

I grew up coming to Cascades for various family and youth programs. After six years on summer staff, I finally made it official and called Cascades my permanent home! I love that my job brings so many surprises; a “day in the office” can look like baking cinnamon rolls for campers, cooking for 500 guests, or planning for our retail spaces, all while working in fellowship with people who love Jesus and serving others. I love waking up to a view of Mt. Rainier, pouring into summer staff, seeing the excited faces of campers, and watching guests build relationships over a hot meal and, presumably, many cups of coffee. It’s a dream come true! Outside of work, I enjoy reading, baking, crafting, and traveling.

Dan Clifford Special Construction Projects ManagerI found my way to Cascades after many years spent as a logger, a self-taught mechanic, building homes, and working in facilities maintenance with the Air Force. My favorite part about camp is that I get to do all of these things in one place! God has blessed my family and I here and I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to build new things for campers and guest to enjoy. When I’m not working on projects for camp, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, leading worship at my church, and working on my own special projects.

I first made my way to Cascades in 2017 when a long-time friend invited me to apply. Despite the fact that I had never even attended camp myself, I was instantly drawn in by this ministry and never looked back! I love working here because I get the opportunity to spend time outdoors, live and serve with a variety of people in a close-knit community, and learn unique new skills – where else can you learn to drive a tractor, operate a zip line, and also help groups of guests all at once? In my free time, I enjoy spending time outside, hiking, and coaching soccer.

I’m so grateful for Cascades and its history of nurturing faith and discipleship in so many people, because this place has done just that for me! I’ve experienced God in tangible ways both as a camper and on summer staff. I have a background in education and church ministry: I spent several years as a high school teacher and then transitioned into children’s ministry, which eventually led me to completing seminary. Here at Cascades, my interests in education, young people, the church, and discipleship intersect as I get to connect with Covenant churches and individuals about camp—and all in the midst of God’s beautiful creation! In my free time, I enjoy spoiling my dogs and being with my family—whether our togetherness looks like watching movies, working in our yard and garden, or traveling.

If you’ve ever been to Cascades, you know that this place has a tendency to keep drawing you back through its gates. This has proven to be true in my own story! My first experience here was for a high school retreat, followed by several years on summer staff. I got a college degree in biology with no intention of working in ministry but was drawn back here once again. One of my favorite aspects of working here is the community. I have made long-lasting relationships with people I’ve met during my time at Cascades – both with my co-workers and with people who come back year after year to different programs and events, and I’ve seen others do the same. In my free time, you can find me playing or coaching soccer, sharing a meal with friends, and traveling.

Cascades holds a dear place in my life and has for many years. In fact, I recently discovered that the first time I attended Cascades was as a nine-month-old baby! I am drawn back to camp by the peace, joy, and growth I experience in my relationship with Christ, and being part of facilitating that same type of experience for others. One of the gifts of spending time at Cascades is meeting so many wonderful people. I met my wife and some of my closest friends at Cascades. I love serving kids, families, and guests through games, worship, and embracing our God-given goofiness. Prior to working on year-round staff at Cascades, I was a graduate student at Seattle Pacific University earning my master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy.  In my spare time, I like to read, watch movies with my wife, Lauren, and our cat, Breakfast, and root on the Seattle Kraken in person or on TV.

Cascades has long been a phenomenal way to indulge in my passion for nature, and now that I get to serve here, I couldn’t be more thrilled! God has granted me with a passion for all things outdoors and a love to serve his people and creation; Cascades is one of those places that easily allows for those aspects to intersect wonderfully. Something about this place encourages people to take a deep breath and enjoy some time separate from the hectic world around us. My goal is to use my talents to continue to allow Cascades to be that respite for everyone. Over the years, I have acquired many skills in various construction fields and attained a degree from Western Washington University in English and Biology. I believe this gives me the know-how to help others learn about the natural processes of God’s creation in a purposeful and exciting way. If I’m not toiling in the fields, you can find me with my wife, Emily, and son, Thorfinn, getting into all sorts of shenanigans. I love to spend time with my family outdoors—hiking or adventuring. If I’m not doing that, then I’m probably reading, writing, watching hockey, or building models. I am ecstatic to help launch Sunrise Farms and bring the fruits of our labors to all who pass through Cascades’ gates!

I’ve spent my life living in the Pacific Northwest, and Cascades is somewhere I have been wanting to call my home for a long time! God opened a door at the perfect time for me, and I’m overjoyed to see what His plan is. Before coming to Cascades, I spent years managing multiple restaurants in the greater Yelm area. I hope that my experience in those restaurants will help promote growth and provide knowledge to anyone that becomes part of our culinary team. When I’m not working, you can find me watching Marvel movies, obsessing over Football, or spending time with my girlfriend Morgan and our dog Zoey.

Camping ministry has always been a part of my life. It was at Covenant Beach and Circle “C” Ranch where I first learned to work hard. I have been blessed to serve at Cascades in many capacities over the years: lifeguarding, leading trail rides, working in the kitchen, housekeeping, retail services, operations team, and my current position in bookkeeping. My favorite part of supporting the ministry at Cascades is seeing the impact that this place has on guests and campers. I love the restoration the beauty brings, the joy from the fellowship that takes place, and the goodness of God’s presence in the stillness. Aside from my part-time role here, I also serve as the Director of Truly Motivated Transitional Living, a residential recovery program in Yelm. In my free time I enjoy gardening, running, lifting weights, and spending time with my family.
