I started as the Transitional Executive Director here at Cascades in January 2018. I was the Executive Minister for Develop Leaders for the Evangelical Covenant Church from August 2012 - August 2017. Prior to assuming that role, I served as the Superintendent of the Pacific Northwest Conference, a position I held since January 1999. I have served churches in Washington, California, and Oregon as a youth pastor, church planter, and revitalization pastor. Born and raised in Washington, I received my undergraduate degree in Political Science from Seattle Pacific University, a Master of Divinity from North Park Theological Seminary, and was ordained in the Evangelical Covenant Church in 1980. My wife Marilyn and I live in Gig Harbor, Washington. We have three married children and five grandchildren.
Cascades encompasses two of my biggest passions in life: ministry and nature. I grew up in Seattle surrounded by a loving family and a faithful church community, with the Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains right outside my window. My faith and outlook on ministry today have been shaped by these experiences and many wonderful, memory-filled summers spent at Covenant Beach, Circle “C” Ranch, and Cascades Camp. Some of my favorite moments at Cascades include watching eager campers roll through the gates during check-in, and listening in during the end-of-the-week campfire as they share the wonderful things that God has done in their lives. I am blessed to make new memories now watching my own family grow up at camp, while I enjoy hiking, golfing, movies, and all things technology in my spare time.
My husband and I got our start in camping ministry a number of years ago in Minnesota and Wisconsin, but eventually found our way out to Cascades. I transitioned into the Guest Services Manager role here after serving as the registrar for camp programs since 1991. My favorite part about my job is showing our facilities and grounds to people for the very first time. The peace and beauty of this place washes over them instantly, and from that point on, they love Cascades! While I'm not working, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, gardening, and caring for our sheep and dogs at our nearby farm.
Special Construction Projects Manager
I found my way to Cascades after many years spent as a logger, a self-taught mechanic, building homes, and working in facilities maintenance with the Air Force. My favorite part about camp is that I get to do all of these things in one place! God has blessed my family and I here and I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to build new things for campers and guest to enjoy. When I’m not working on projects for camp, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, leading worship at my church, and working on my own special projects.
No two days are ever quite the same for me. That’s one of the main reasons I love working at Cascades! Whether there’s a puzzle to solve, a problem to troubleshoot, an opportunity to serve, or something to learn, each day holds an exciting newness. Coming to Cascades as a longtime Washingtonian with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, I’ve found that camping ministry is a great fit for my background and passions. I get excited about fixing things, building things, and making things work to their fullest potential for our guests. Some of my favorite moments are spent being with my growing family, hiking and climbing, building things, and serving and learning alongside my community group at church.
Having grown up as a camper at Cascades, I love that I can give back to this home which shaped so much of my character and faith. I see horses as a catalyst for ministry, as one of God’s ways of teaching us more about ourselves, more about Himself, and more about the precious relationship He seeks with us. The ranch is so much more than horses—it is an opportunity to experience the love of God in a fresh, new way. Whether I am building fences, training horses, or teaching riders, the diversity of each day keeps my role engaging, and reminds me that each detail is important to ministry. After studying English at Whitworth and traveling abroad for my education, I love being able to apply my passion for stories, adventure, and people into the programs at Cascades. Beyond camp I spend much of my time reading and writing, backpacking, climbing, and traveling with friends.
It's a lifelong dream come true to find myself at Cascades serving as one of the creative minds behind this ministry. Having grown up here attending programs and working both on summer staff and as a year-round intern, camping ministry has become a deep-rooted passion of mine. I love the innovative aspect of the program department, which allows me to dream up unique experiences that can only be found at camp, as well as the relational aspect, which allows me to interact with a variety of people and help them rest, connect, and learn. My favorite part of camp is seeing something "click" for one of our campers - a fresh understanding of God, a newfound confidence, etc. Beyond my job at Cascades, I enjoy writing, baking, exploring the beautiful Pacific Northwest, walking my dog, and spending time with my husband.
Cascades has had a huge impact on my life over the years. God has used this place to influence pretty much every major decision in my adult life, including drawing me to the Pacific Northwest from Texas to work on summer staff and as an intern, and meeting and proposing to my wife - and now He's landed me here once again, in a position I never could have anticipated. This truly is a place where you can get away from the distractions of life and let God work on your story. Just be prepared for Him to shake things up! My favorite part about my role here is using food as a means to serve God. I love how food, especially the act of breaking bread together, can be a form of worship in itself. In my spare time I enjoy barbecuing, watching movies, hiking, reading, hanging out with friends, and bird watching.
Guest Services Coordinator
I first made my way to Cascades as a college student, eager to serve God by pouring into kids as a camp counselor. I proceeded to spend several years on summer staff, and then moved to Texas for an internship after I graduated. Thinking my time of ministry at Cascades had come to a close, I was surprised to receive a call one day to serve as the year-round camp host - and the rest is history! My favorite part about my role is helping guests feel at home during their stay, and working behind-the-scenes to alleviate any stress that might disrupt their experience here. Outside of camp, I enjoy playing games, reading, crafting, and exploring the outdoors.
I get excited about working behind-the-scenes, finding solutions to problems, and having the opportunity to learn something new every day - which is why serving in the operations department is such a great fit for me! When I first came to Cascades, I fell in love with the ministry of providing a space for people to have an extraordinary experience with God. This philosophy is what fuels me and keeps me doing what I'm doing to this day. Outside of my job, some of my favorite moments are spent with my family, making things, and playing the banjo.
I've found myself continually drawn to Cascades throughout my life. God has used this place to shape who I am, and I feel blessed to be a part of this team that gets to serve God and others through ministry in the woods. I love how the registrar aspect of my job lets me facilitate the process of people getting to this place that has meant so much to me and my story. I also love the programmatic side of what I do, which allows me to be creative, relational, and forward-thinking. My favorite part of my job is watching people experience Cascades for the very first time - seeing people fall in love with this place and witnessing how God speaks to them in the seclusion of the wilderness. Outside of camp I enjoy cooking, traveling, watching movies, and spending time with friends.
I grew up in Elk, WA and was working a retail job before I found my way to Cascades this past summer as part of the general operations team. I decided to stick around a little longer as the Operations Intern, and spend the whole year improving and caring for camp's facilities, running activities like zip line and paintball, and working on other special projects. I'm looking forward to how I'll learn and grow as an individual during my time here in the off-season.
Originally from Spokane, WA, I earned a degree in Linguistics & Cultural Studies from Seattle Pacific University. This past year found me teaching after-school enrichment classes and planning Lego-themed birthday parties, but during the summer I accepted a position here at Cascades as the Program Intern. I'm excited to spend my year behind-the-scenes in the program department - planning retreats, creating curriculum for summer programs, helping recruit summer staff, and more! This internship is a perfect mix of opportunities that utilize my strengths and passions, as well as unique challenges. I think the combination is going to result in a lot of growth, and I love that I get to do that in a ministry setting that I care for immensely.
Food Services Intern
Originally from Kirkland, WA, I was studying Political Science at University of Puget Sound before I decided to take some time off to serve as the Food Services Intern here at Cascades. I get to spend the year behind-the-scenes in the kitchen, providing thousands of guests with delicious home-cooked meals. I'm looking forward to learning more about both the world and myself during my time here in the off-season.
I grew up in Snohomish, WA, and was finishing up a degree in Psychology from Washington State University when I decided to stick around for the off-season here at Cascades as the Ranch Intern. I'm excited to spend the year caring for and training horses, leading trail rides for guests, helping put on programs at Sunrise Ranch, and more. I'm most looking forward to getting to know all of our horses better and growing in my knowledge of how everything works behind-the-scenes.
